Elder-Focused Mediation

What is Elder-focused Mediation?

It is a facilitated conversation that

• preserves the integrity and dignity of the elder;

• strengthens the family members' relationships;

• designs an eldercare strategy that benefits all involved;

• and maintains the quality of life for the elder and his/her caregivers.

How does Elder-focused Mediation work?
The elder, family members or guardian contact the mediator to discuss the situation.  Initial consultation is always free of charge.

1.  The mediator contacts all the affected parties and invites them to the mediation.

2. In high-conflict situations, the mediator may recommend Initial Participant sessions with the individual parties prior to a joint mediation session.

3.  In situations where the elder’s capacity to mediate is in question, the parties may wish to decide on ways to insure that the elder’s voice is heard in the conversation.

4.  A joint mediation session is scheduled and all the affected parties are invited to participate.  The first session is usually scheduled for three hours.  Additional sessions can be scheduled if necessary and if the affected parties agree.

5.  The mediator drafts an agreement based on the joint mediation sessions.  All affected parties are given time to examine the draft, share it with their own advocates and advisors and raise concerns if any arise.  Additional joint sessions may be necessary to resolve significant concerns.

6.  A final version of the agreement is presented to the affected parties for approval and signature.  The mediator remains available for further conversation and support.

The basic fee for Elder-focused mediation is

$75 per hour.

No one will ever be denied mediation services due to financial need.
